Actually I'd give this 4 1/2 stars, but it was very close to 5. I first read Wrede in my youth with "Dealing With Dragons" and loved it, but I didn't think about finding her books on Kindle till I saw this one. I felt the story was very good and recommend it to others who like sword & sorcery or fantasy stories.

Now I need to find some more Wrede for my Kindle!

Female lead character could have been a little stronger but she came through eventually. Excellent flow and story.Quite a bit of action.
I am anxious for the next chapter of this story. Great fun to escape into this "world". I highly recommend it.
This story of a young witch discovering her destiny didn't quite fully explore here witchcraft side. Charters could have fleshed out more and created a possible two book set.
Nothing special but did finish it and it was moderately entertaining. Would not read more of the series since only average
Four stars because I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Not five, because it is obviously Patricia Wrede just starting out as an author. The perks on the edition were a plus pictures of the author, along with a fascinating insight into the way she edited the first book in the Lyra world series. I'll probably go on to read the rest of the Lyra books, even if they are not as polished as the Dragon books, the Mairelon set, and the correspondence series.
I enjoyed this book so much! Unlike many of Wrede's books, this one is not for children. Good character development and challenges, set in a slightly creepy fantasy universe that was a pleasure to read!
Ranira is a very reluctant witch that denies that she has any magical abilities at all. That's not surprising seeing that the local temple guards burned both of her parents for witchcraft. During the course of this story Ranira accepts the fact of her magical abilities when she is forced to use them to defend herself and some new found friends. A well written book with good dialogue and lots of adventure.
