This isn't Ann Radcliffe at her best. If you are looking for a Radcliffe novel to start with I'd recommend the Romance of the Forest. The story was interested however in that it wasn't focused on one heroine or one hero. There were many characters worth rooting for. I thought the introduction was an oversimplification and a vast stretch to apply this book to Freudian psychology. This edition is quite interesting and includes topics which were taboo in the late 1700s. If you aren't ready to invest in one of Radcliffe's longer novels - there is a lovely Audible edition of the Sicilian Romance that makes a great companion to this book. If you aren't into audiobooks and only plan on reading one Radcliffian novel, I highly recommend The Romance in the Forest.Tags : Amazon.com: A Sicilian Romance (Oxford World's Classics) (9780192836663): Ann Radcliffe, Alison Milbank: Books,Ann Radcliffe, Alison Milbank,A Sicilian Romance (Oxford World's Classics),Oxford University Press,0192836668,Gothic,Classics,English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh,FICTION Classics,FICTION Gothic,Fiction,Literary,Literature - Classics Criticism,Romance,Romance: Gothic,Romance: historical,Literature: Classics
A Sicilian Romance Oxford World Classics Ann Radcliffe Alison Milbank Books Reviews
British literature while the novel itself had just been born (the structure of it not quite clear to early readers yet so don't let the lack of dialogue breaks annoy you). I only rated 4 stars because Anne Radcliffe takes a huge step into saying certain progressive things (no spoilers) but then steps back to retain the status quo.
The fun part is the journey though different lands. The lame part is everything else.
great story book, ahhh take a different journey a the love of a reader ~ loved it
Where to begin? It's Ann Radcliffe. She is a wonderful novelist, and "A Sicilian Romance" is an absolutely beautiful people of Gothic/Romantic literature. I have already recommend this book to everyone I know, and only have one minor complaint, which is the difference in page numbers when compared to a physical novel. However, that is to be expected with any book for , and did not detract from my reading, nor should it detract from the rating. A fairly easy read (I recommend doing research into the issues raised by the novel to really get a profound understanding), very entertaining, and a great introduction to Gothic literature. Highly recommend for anyone, especially someone looking for a good novel.
A Sicilian Romance by Ann Radcliff is a well documented historical novel. It takes place in Sicily and is about the Marquis of Mazzini and his 2nd wife, his son and two daughters. There is much description in this novel and many characters are introduced. It kept my attention though, and had many twists and turns and excitement. I had trouble putting it down. I highly recommend this book.
I'm a literature major at the UW, which means I've read quite a few novels over the last few years, both in class and in my personal time. For the most part, it's a morality tale. There's a 'happy ending', it's a bit like a Hallmark movie that way. Overall, it was an alright read. Very well written, some of the characters are really interesting. However, not really my taste.
The most serendipitous of circumstances and extreme poetic justice.. but I was still entertained. If you like the genre, you like the genre, and if not, find a shorter novel to reaffirm your antipathy.
